So, I am in charge of the Craft Fair at our school because it is a senior fundraiser.
(Now you might understand why I am avoiding reponsibilities at home!)
It seems that as the years go by our faculty and staff become more apathetic and more interested in "what is in it for them."
For example, as I was relaying the information on the Silent Auction baskets that each home room was to make, an administrator asks, "Why would we want to do these baskets?"
OK, in that moment, I'll be honest, I felt a little HATE. Do I want to be in charge of this whole thing? Do any of us really do too many things in our lives because we WANT to? We do things in our lives predominantly because we are fearful of some consequence or feel it our duty.
I responded with, "Well, I think that we should always try to help the school and our peers. This is a significant fundraiser for our seniors. They will be seniors one day, right?"
As the weeks have gone by and we try to get adult volunteers, I am struggling to get people to volunteer. Everyone is so "busy." Since when did our own over-scheduling become a reason for non-action?
Anyway, we have a lot of student volunteers for all time slots...That's great news! Now I have to figure out how to organize the chaos...Stay tuned!
Apathy is alive and well in Boise too. Seems if it is something "fun and exciting" (aka, I feel like I am "in" with the crew.....from adults no less) then people will do it. If it is true help for the kids...sometimes people are all lip service. Bummer!!! I would help you if I was there. Anything I can do from here?
ReplyDeleteI'm SOOO sorry for the apathy around you. I guess that's the biggest difference between elementary and high school...I have so many parents helpers I don't know what to do with them often times. Hang in there, these things have a way of working out.
