I don't have school today...I am going to dig in and attempt to clean some of my house. It really is out of control....!
Yesterday, the seniors had their annual breakfast. The senior officers came up to me right as I arrived and told me that they had bought something for Jon, who is going into the Marines on Tuesday. That means that he will not participate in graduation. His best friend, Daniel, came up and talked about him and their years together. Then, the officers presented their gift card and a gown and hat...NICE! I couldn't help but tear up...Fabulous kids!
The day continued as usual but went long into the afternoon with setup for the annual Academy Awards for seniors. As the program proceeded, I was so proud of my students. One, in particular, received a scholarship for 32,000 dollars! That will cover 4 years of tuition and books! Isn't that great? He had no idea and it was fun to see him and his excitement as he received the award.
On another note, I gave an assignment to my calculus kiddos where they were to write a letter to a teacher at the school that has made a positive difference in their lives. I told them that I preferred that they not write it to me, but they don't listen! :-) The letters from my Calculus BC class were particularly touching. I have been their math teacher for the entire 4 years of high school. I feel like they are my kids...They do call me their "math mom!"
Anyway, I'm feeling a little nostalgic and tender at the end of this school year. I am really a lucky lady!
You may be lucky, but more so....your students are LUCKY. I'm sure you have made a positive influence on many of their lives. Way to go!!!
ReplyDeleteYou are going to have a movie made about you someday! I am glad to hear some good endings to a stressful year. I know teaching is full of ups and downs, but I am so glad you do it. I want to move to Texas when my girls are in high school so you can be their teacher...or you could move here. :-)
ReplyDeleteSuz - what you do is truly amazing! Even when they kids give up on themselves, you don't...!
ReplyDeleteKudos to you...how did the house cleaning go? ugh is what comes to mind.
